Contemporary Stage Company

Chrystine Bennett

Chrystine has been the costume designer for Contemporary Stage Company’s productions of: Ghosts, Mister Paul, Mystery of the Rose Bouquet and The Tunnel: both for its première at Croydon Warehouse and for its run at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. All the shows have had different requirements: Ghosts, strict period; Mister Paul, a character-led play where David Graham-Young and the actors were offered alternative costume interpretations; Mystery of the Rose Bouquet, a seemingly realistic two hander had a dreamy memory sequence; The Tunnel’s costumes were a response to David Burrows’ set design, the strong electric colours of which made shades of white and cream a sympathetic as well as contrasting choice.

Her costume work has led to an on-going relationship with Chrys Salt at The Actors Centre where she advises actors on what to wear for Ms. Salt’s audition showcases.

Besides designing costumes, Chrystine also designs sets and has enjoyed collaborations with other directors including Antonio Peluso, with whom she designed three operas: The Marriage of Figaro and Coronation of Poppea for Opera for All and on a small scale tour of Carmen for Welsh National Opera. Other opera work: Eugene Onegin for Stowe Opera and La Traviata for Beaufort Opera. She also spent a year as company designer for The Akashic Dance Theatre.

New work is of particular interest to her. Most recently, she designed The Sociable Plover at The Old Red Lion in Islington. Past productions have included: The Maias (Greenwich Playhouse), Extracts from My Diary (The White Bear) Sense of Belonging (The Arcola) and Long Lonesome Cowgirls (The Old Red Lion).
